SCUF Campaign Work

From time to time, when issues are raised by members, members may collectively target one or two for campaign work. This work may involve writing a letter, writing a press release, holding an event, lobbying the local MP and conducting and presenting the results of research, etc.

March/April 2008

In February SCUF carried out research into the local Mental Health Trust’s service user payment policy. In April it completed a letter which was sent to Tim Bryson (Director of Children’s Services and Nursing) to request that the Trust review its existing service user payment policy through consultation with local user and carer groups.

June 2007

SCUF conducted a questionnaire to identify whether or not people under the Care Programme Approach (CPA) were receiving their Care Plans, involved in their care planning and that their Care Plans were being reviewed regularly. The results, which were presented to the relevant service managers at the local Mental Health Trust, clearly showed that a high percentage of respondents under CPA were not receiving the care planning they should be. As a direct result the Trust made it an urgent priority to address these issues.

November 2006

The proposed Welfare Reform Bill’s Employment and Support Allowance system as a replacement for Incapacity Benefit prompted campaign work from SCUF in November 2006. Members agreed to write to local as well as national MP’s (to help raise awareness) regarding their concerns about the Bill. Two members also met with local MP’s David Howarth to express SCUF’s concerns.
